We are the Jackson Jets, and we are soaring to success!
Our mission as a staff is commitment to instructional practices that result in high quality student products and projects. We teach at benchmark, intervene when needed, and expect student products, and behavior that are at benchmark or above. We are dedicated to each student achieving academically and succeeding in all aspects of their life. We do this by providing a positive learning environment in which all students can work to their maximum potential. At Lydia Jackson Elementary School we have created a safe, secure, and nurturing climate in where students develop peaceful solutions to problems and focus on academic work.
Lydia Jackson Elementary is a K-5 school with approximately 500 students. Our school has a high Latino population with small percentages of White, African American, and Asian populations. Our school is located in uptown Whittier at the corner of Painter and La Cuarta.
Lydia Jackson has many wonderful programs that support our students. Our students read over 27,000 books last year participating in the California Reads Reading Incentive Program. Our students read books from our Wonder of Reading Library that was remodeled last year with funds donated by community members, parents, staff, and students. We use the Math Pro Incentive Program to help our students learn their math facts through quick tests and monthly rewards.
After school we have three programs – WYN Club, Boys and Girls Club, and Reach for the Stars. WYN Club is on the school campus and provided by the City of Whittier. This club is a recreational program. The Boys and Girls Club provides a “walk to the club” after school program at the club. The students who participate are picked up at Jackson and walked to the club by 3 adults. WCSD provides the Reach for the Stars Program that is an enrichment program for our students supported by the 21st Century Grant.
Lydia Jackson is very fortunate to have parent volunteers that support academic programs. Our PTA, ELAC, SSC, are very active and hold many family events. Our PTA provides our school with field trips, assemblies, an annual gift, and parent support for our California Reads Reading Incentive Program. Our ELAC and SSC provide the parent perspective on our academic programs for our students and guidance on use of our school funds. Our parents under teacher support provide a before school reading program twice a week in our library. Our Mañanitas de lectura is a wonderful support to our reading program and early arrivers at school as it is held at 7:15 a.m. twice a week.
Jackson participates in many exciting school programs and events. We are study artists with the support of the Art Masters Program once a month. We are participants in two parades sponsored by the City of Whittier. We have relationships with local senior citizens’ homes and visit them 4 times a year. We raised over $2600 for the American Heart Association through Jump Rope for Heart this school year.
